Conclusions
Because the ATi card would freeze the machine when pretty much any other program was running, I wanted to see if I could get the Leadtek software to crash. With the TV window running I opened Adobe Photoshop, Internet Explorer, Winamp, AIM, and Microsoft Word. The TV kept humming along just fine. The final test was to open up mIRC. I have a script that runs for about 30 seconds after opening IRC that absolutely gobbles system resources and causes 90-100% cpu utilization. Even with the script running the TV made it through unscathed. Bravo Leadtek! Is this the world’s most perfect tuner\capture card you ask? Well…almost. There were a few relatively minor issues I ran into that kept it from being 100% perfect. The first was that I noticed a hissing and popping sound coming from the speakers when the card was plugged into the soundcard’s Line-In. I took a guess that this was the fault of my Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (which never agreed very well with Windows XP) and I turned out to be right. After switching to a Hercules Game Theater XP (which has actual complete drivers for Windows XP) the hissing went away. So while the Leadtek card wasn’t causing the problem, it would be nice if it had an internal CD-audio pass through option like the TV Wonder. The only other issue I had is that the card is connected to the GTXP’s AUX input, yet for some reason the TV card’s volume control will only affect the Line-In volume slider, and not the AUX one, even though it is set to use the AUX input. This renders the TV card’s software volume control useless. Its not a big deal as I can adjust the volume using the knob on my Klipsch Promedias, but its something I would like to see fixed with a driver update so I can adjust volume level by remote. Other than those two things this card does everything it’s supposed to and extremely well at that. Highly recommended.
