Soyo KT400 Motherboard Review
Posted by: Ben on 25th of March 2003
The Soyo KT400 Bios is as easy to use as its excellent predecessors, with the majority of important details being tucked away in the "Soyo Combo Features" section. CPU speed, memory timings and memory ratios are all adjusted in this one main screen. Overclocking has always been one of the Dragon range's strengths, and hopefully the Dragon KT400 Ultra will be no exception. We have already seen what the VIA Northbridges are capable of in the past, with several of our Epox boards reaching 200MHz FSB with consummate ease. To aid my testing I am using the OCZ PC3700 memory (review coming soon) which is rated to a whopping 466MHz. Before I get to the test itself, let's take a look at what features Soyo have included to aid overclocking. First up, DDR voltage adjustments up to 2.7V can be selected. Add to this CPU voltage adjustments up to 1.85V, and 1MHz incremental FSB changes up to 255MHz, as well as multiplier support up to 14x, and on paper at least, we have some serious overclocking potential. To see what maximum FSB we could get, I set my unlocked Palomino XP2000 to a multiplier of 6x, so that even at 200Mhz FSB it is running at a safe 1200MHz. Let's fire it up!

The maximum FSB I reached with the Ultra was an impressive 189MHz, certainly not the best we have seen, but very respectable indeed - and impressive for a board with the Dragon's feature set. In terms of DDR manipulation, the Ultra has all the features you could ask for, with the ability to tweak DRAM CAS Latency, Bank Interleave, Precharge to Active (Trp), Active to Precharge (Tras), Active to CMD, DRAM Queue Depth and DRAM Command Rate settings.

A nice addition from the Dragon Ultra KT333 is the ability to change the PCI divider all the way up to /6. With a divider of 6, you are still at spec even at 200MHz FSB!!
